BioImage Suite

What is it?

BioImage Suite is a collection of applications that allow you to view and analyze brain images. A brief video overview of the existing applications can be found here.

What can I use it for?

The MNI2TAL application provides an online brain atlas and is useful for converting between two common brain coordinate systems: Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) space and Talairach space. These coordinate systems allow researchers to compare brain imaging data across individuals. oMNI2TAL can also be used to identify the corresponding Brodmann’s area and anatomical term for a specific set of MNI coordinates.Brodmann areas provide a standardized system for naming specific regions of the cerebral cortex, based on the underlying arrangement of brain cells.

What are some example assignments?

Seraphin & Stock’s Neurosynth assignment also makes use of BioImage Suite’s MNI2TAL application as does my modified version of their assignment.

This activity provides practice with converting between MNI coordinates and Talairach coordinates and with identifying Brodmann areas.
